I love this fountain pen! I have several other fountain pens, but this one works great. It hasn't leaked, it hasn't stopped writing. I use it for all my letters.

True Writer® Fountain Pen, KyotoI received this pen as a gift after I mentioned that I really liked the styling and look of the pen. I was very excited to receive it as I am a pen lover and have an extensive collection of vintage and modern pens. Unfortunately my experience with this pen has been very poor. To be honest I was pleased initially with the pen as it seemed to write very well and it was indeed a beautiful pen but to my surprise the pen broke after just a few months of casual writing with it. It was not my daily writer but just my special event or weekend writer. The nib collar broke off and then the nib then separated from the feed. This made it unusable. I don't write very hard and I have not even had a vintage pen break in this manner. I can only assume it is defective or poor workmanship although it does seem to be well made in other regards. I do feel it is one of the better looking modern fountain pens on the market but I have had more success with lower quality fountains than this one. I hope purchasers of this pen have better luck than I did.

One of my favorite pens
from Andalusia, AL
I have about 30 fountain pens in my collection. I have different brands, different nib sizes, some expensive, some not. This pen is one of my favorites. Great size, great nib, good ink flow, and absolutely beautiful. If you are looking for a good, inexpensive but great quality fountain pen, you won't go wrong with this pen. Great pen for a very fair price.

True Writer? 5 Stars On All Counts!
from Hamilton, NY
I'd been searching for a well-made, beautifully crafted, richly colored, reasonably priced and smooth writing, modern fountain pen. The True Writer has exceeded ALL my expectations! I have bought other modern fountain pens but aesthetically they just didn't 'float my boat." The Kyoto True Writer is a gorgeous, many colored acrylic resin, which I can't take my eyes off. Most importantly, it writes buttery smooth, with a generous, wet, medium steel nib, which can be switched out with other offered Levenger True Writer nibs. The price is just right for the quality and these pens hold their value and are sought years after make date. I'm incredibly happy with my purchase and hope to add more True Writers in future. Great job Levenger! I'm sure to be a returning customer.
My First Levenger
from rochester, ny
This is the first Levenger pen I have owned and I must also confess that I am new to using fountain pens, but with that said - I love this pen. The weight and feel in my hand is exactly what I was looking for. The look of the pen is beautiful - stylish yet professional enough to use everyday in the office. The ink flows freely from the nib, resulting in a great looking script. My only (minor) complaint is that the cap is very difficult to screw on/off. It is a very tight fit and I'm hoping that over time this will resolve itself.Overall a great pen well worth the investment.
...and the ideas flow
from Madison, WI
I don't write poetry like many of the reviewers of this pen, but I can say that the Kyoto inspires. It feels good in the hand and is a joy to write with. And like the ink, the ideas flow when I use this pen. I have other fountain pens, including the gorgeous Otto Hutt Guilloche, but this pen represents the best value of all cherished pens.
The True Writer is a Smooth Writer
from Phoenix, AZ
I've been debating whether or not to buy this pen for some time and I finally pulled the trigger a couple of weeks ago during a sale. After using my new Kyoto True Writer since I received it about ten days ago, I can safely say that I wish I had purchased it sooner. I suffer from Obsessive Pen Disorder (OPD) and have several fountain pens which range in quality and price and I'm already willing to say that the True Writer is going to be one of my daily carry pens. After receiving the pen, I loaded the convertor with Noodlers Dragon's Napalm ink and began taking notes in my Circa Notebook. Later that day, I used it in a Leuchtturm 1917 a consistent notebook which likes some fountain pen nibs better than others. In the Leuchtturm the Kyoto was smooth and left an excellent line although it seemed a little broader - pretty much a function of the ink and the paper rather than the pen itself. In a Rhodia pad, it glided across the surface of the paper effortlessly leaving a sharp beautiful line. The barrel of the pen is nicely shaped and swells slightly as you move towards the business end. It's nicely weighted and extremely comfortable in the hand even with the cap posted, overall the pen is stable and a pleasure to write with. I find that I like the line quality and tactile properties of the pen better than some of my more expensive pens. The screw cap gives me the confidence to carry the pen in my pocket which can sometimes be a dicey proposition in the summer heat of the desert.Fit and finish are excellent. The Kyoto resin glows as you turn the pen in your hand and light hits it -- it has a look reminiscent of tortoise shell. I purchased the fine point and the line width is equivalent to a 0.7 Pentel Energel although your mileage may vary depending on the ink you use. I tend to use Noodlers Inks and Pilot's Iroshizuku inks and I'm planning on cycling several of them through the pen because so much of a pen's performance is coupled to the combination of nib/ink/paper.Overall I'm extremely satisfied with the Kyoto True Writer. It's a handsome and visually appealing pen that's a solid performer. It's performance is on par with pens twice the price and given Levenger's track record of customer service I know they'll stand behind it in the unlikely event I run into problems.A strong recommended buy.
My New Kyoto
from San Diego, CA
quite happy with my Kyoto (Fine Nib). Pen fits my XL to XXL size hand well - good weight and nice feel to it. Nib is slightly flexy. Also purchased med. nib, but have not tried it as yet. Fine leans toward Medium on this pen (or they gave me the wrong one - will check when install the medium). Much thicker than my Sailor 1911L fine point. Ink flow is terrific. Lots of great comments on the looks of this pen - more so than any other I own. Very happy with this purchase. Highly recommended. excellent pen - a steal for the money -- by the way loaded appropriate size picture and it would never load so hopefully you don't get this review 3 times.
An awesome pen
from New York, NY
I bought this pen thinking it would look gorgeous but not sure how it would write. I was astounded by the ridiculously smooth nib. I bought it in fine and it is such a juicy, wet-writing pen, it's wonderful to use. Glides along good quality Levenger paper, or my rhodia pads, but is great even on office paper too--though it puts down enough ink that bleeding and feathering could be a problem on such cheap paper. It's a great writer and it sure does look beautiful. I sit and hold it up to the light sometimes, just to watch the light glint off the different shades of the acrylic. It's pretty cool. All in all, absolutely worth it, with the one caveat that from a writing quality standpojnt I have less expensive pens that write as well (TWSBI 580 comes to mind). But in terms of looks, this is right up there with pens 2-3 times the price.
An Eye Catcher
from Arlington, Texas
A nice, beautiful pen that I enjoy using on a regular basis! I love flashing it to co-workers and strangers alike. As far as function: I ordered it with a fine point nib, but it is not quite as fine as I prefer. I didn't see an extra fine nib available, to my disappointment. Also, I write in short bursts and it would be great if I didn't have to constantly screw the cap off and back on. Hopefully Levenger will offer a pen in this price range and beauty with an extra fine nib and a non-screw cap.
Enjoyable writing experience
from Spokane, WA
I bought the Kyoto because I was looking for a better fountain pen that would use a standard international short cartridge that wouldn't clog frequently. I have highly enjoyed writing with the Kyoto. Enough that it has helped improve my productivity at work. I enjoyed the Kyoto so much that I bought two more True Writer pens so I could use have fountain pens in two other ink colors (I frequently take multiple rounds of notes in different colors on a project).
