Productive coexistence: these Levenger hybrids fuel both your electronic and paper needs

In his new book iDisorder, psychologist Larry Rosen advises that as much as we may love our personal technology tools (and he does), it’s good to take a “tech break” periodically.

At Levenger, we’re designing ways to achieve this balance through what we call productive coexistence. Products that let you use both fast tech and slow can actually help you be more productive, as you’re using your brain in different ways. Here are three to consider.

  1.        Circa iPad Foldover Notebook. See how well your iPad and your Circa notebook work with each other side by side. Sometimes it’s more efficient to tap and scroll; other times it’s more effective to write. Now both share an equal presence.
  2.       iPad Laplander. More of us who love to read are discovering when and what we prefer to read as an eBook, and when and what we enjoy reading more as a print book. This cozy lap pillow for reading answers both these calls.
  3.        Performance Pad Folio. Taking notes on a Levenger note pad with your iPad by your side can be especially productive when you’re researching on the Web and need to write as you go. Plus, having both these technologies—one fast, one slow—in one convenient folio keeps you at the ready for whatever the business day demands.

Julie Morgenstern and Levenger launch new line of Circa products for staying organized

MAY 7, 2012 – Organizing and time management expert Julie Morgenstern (www.juliemorgenstern.com ) has teamed up with the specialty retailer Levenger to produce a new line of products aimed at helping busy professionals avoid timewasters, plan meaningful days—and stay balanced between work life and personal life. The line is available exclusively through Levenger (www.levenger.com).

The new line uses Levenger’s award-winning Circa note-taking system. Circa notebooks are known for their flexibility, with pages that can be easily removed and refiled in any Circa notebook. The secret is the notebook’s spine, a row of removable discs that both hold paper together and easily release it.

The centerpiece of the Morgenstern Circa line is a quarterly day-by-day agenda, the Circa Balanced Life Planner. Also included are a notebook designed to capture action steps from meetings, the Circa Next Action Notebook and a five-tiered planner for tracking multiple projects, the Circa Stepped Project Notebook.

Add-ons include a set of note cards for logging recurring tasks , the Circa Do Every Pad and another set for allocating times each day for fulfilling both professional and personal roles, the Circa Time Map Pad. Note cards come Circa-punched for inserting wherever needed in a Circa notebook.

The Balanced Life Planner and other products “help you make good decisions about where to spend your time,” says Morgenstern.

Morgenstern, whom USA Today has described as the “queen of putting people’s lives in order,” is a 20-year veteran of organizational and productivity programs. She has provided training to Fortune 500 companies as well as individuals worldwide and is an often-tapped expert, sharing her advice on Today, Good Morning America, the former Oprah Winfrey Show, and NPR. She is frequently quoted on the pages of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and O.

“I chose to partner with Levenger because of our shared commitment to quality and innovation,” says Morgenstern. “The interchangeable parts of the Circa series support my philosophy that each system should be custom fit to the individual. And the rearrangeable page format is a perfect match for the dynamics of managing time. When you have to change your plans, it helps if your system can accommodate that need for flexibility.”

Features in the planner such as the 4D column prompt you to delete, delay, diminish or delegate the unnecessary, while a column for time estimating helps you plan what you can realistically accomplish in a day.

Morgenstern’s products become part of the Circa Thought Leader series at Levenger, partnerships that Levenger is undertaking to turn philosophies such as Morgenstern’s Balanced Life methodology into useful products.

Morgenstern’s Balanced Life, which recognizes the value of assigning time to both the personal and the professional, is in sync with the Slow Tech philosophy that Levenger practices. The company brings another level of productivity to high-tech gear by designing supporting products that use the heritage technologies of wood, leather and most especially, paper—thus balancing high tech and low.

“As much as we may work in the cloud, many of us still like to be grounded with something reassuringly physical, like a well-designed planner,” says Steve Leveen, the CEO and co-founder of Levenger. “Many experts will tell you that the physical act of writing something helps us remember. And writing with high quality, intelligently designed gear means you’re more likely to enjoy it and hence perform better overall.”

Morgenstern’s products feature the high-quality paper that Levenger is known for. They also include a number of helpful tips for finding time for the important things in one’s day and one’s life. Morgenstern, whose company is based in Manhattan, is also a New York Times bestselling author. Levenger is offering signed copies of her book, Time Management from the Inside Out.

High-quality note-taking products are among the major offerings of Levenger, which also sells fine writing instruments as well as various wood and leather holders for personal electronics. Founded in 1987, Levenger’s mission is to outfit customers with high-quality products designed for reading, thinking and creative expression. The company is headquartered in Delray Beach, Florida.

Mind Your 3s and 5s

Now that indexing is done more and more via computer, you don’t really hear them called “index cards” anymore—and yet, Levenger’s own 3 x 5 cards remain a favorite among their loyal customers. Levenger continues to hear about how these sturdy, compact little slices of paper remain the standard for taking notes on the fly or in the quiet, so Levenger continues to make products that give preferential treatment to 3 x 5 note-taking.

Taking Notes about Making Notes

The Levenger Shirt Pocket Briefcase was specially designed to fit into a shirt pocket, and it offers a 3 x 5 card platform out front with room for several cards, plus a pocket out back to hold more cards. So you’ll always be ready to take notes, write notes-to-self, and write down directions to give to someone. There’s even a version with a pen sleeve and an included Walletini Pen, the Pen Pocket Briefcase.

Room for Passport?

Yes—as we intimated, this concept has grown well beyond just one product. Have a look at the International Pocket Briefcase, which folds book-style and has a 3 x 5 card platform on the right, a pen sleeve for a Pocketini ballpoint pen in the middle, credit/membership cards on the left, a lengthwise pocket for paper cash and traveler’s checks, and—here’s the clincher—room for a passport behind the credit cards. It’s available in smooth leather or pebbled Bomber Jacket leather—and with or without the Pocketini Pen inside.

Room for Phone?

Yes, and 007 would be duly outfitted for his exploits with an International Phone Pocket Briefcase, which has a mesh pocket on the left for your cell phone or smartphone rather than pockets for credit cards—but still a pocket behind it for passport, because that particular technology hasn’t changed (yet!).

Zip Tobacco Pouch, Anyone?

…Tongue-in-cheek, of course. In smooth, full-grain tobacco leather specially made for Levenger by their partners in England, the Cambridge Note/Phone Case offers a gusseted pocket for phone on the left and a 3 x 5 card platform on the right—complemented by a telescoping ballpoint pen in the center and a rugged brass zipper to keep it all safe and sound while you travel near and far.

…Moving along swiftly, SwiftNotes includes two notepads of 3 x 5 cards (yes, notepads of them!), which can be torn out notepad-style. On the left is a pocket for loose papers and whatnot, and the whole thing closes nicely via the dual loops and the included ballpoint pen. Many customers collect SwiftNotes in every new color that comes out, making note-taking all the more interesting and lively. And more notepads are available as refills, of course.

Stackables for Desktop

Levenger has developed myriad creations for the beloved 3 x 5 card over the years, including the Nantucket Note Card Box (with or without cards included), the tiered Note Card Bleachers, special 3 x 5 Card Envelopes for sending a thoughtful note to a special friend or client, and the 3 x 5 Card Holder (in smooth or Bomber Jacket leather) for quick access to a whole stack of your favorite Levenger index cards.

The Circa Jotlet

A Circa Notebook comprising 3 x 5 cards? We’re not kidding—what has been called Levenger’s “PDA” size is indeed a notepad composed of 3 x 5 cards whose Circa-punched top fits into three Circa discs. No 3 x 5–centered life is complete without them.

Trust Levenger for everything 3 x 5–related—from storage to carryables, from notebooks to notepads to cards. Because indeed, everything does come in threes…and fives.

Levenger Special Request: Taking Requests – and Taking Names

As certain paper styles have become less popular with Levenger customers, they had fallen out of the product assortment—but that doesn’t sit well with many of Levenger’s most ardent fans! So Levenger has brought back those special styles and formats, by Special Request. On-demand printing is the wave of the future, and each Special Request refill set or notebook is printed on demand, order by order.

The Cover Story: Circa Gets Personal

The flysheet of each Circa Special Request Notebook is patterned in the customer’s choice of the light blue mottling of Composition, the ceramics-inspired Mosaic, the white-against-black line cityscape drawing of Skyline, or the artistic and colorful Words design. There’s a white area for personalization, either for the customer’s (or their recipient’s) name, organization’s name, or subject—or, it can be left blank altogether and filled in later.

Each Special Request Notebook comes with Circa 1/2″ black discs, translucent front and back covers, and 60 sheets of paper. And the paper comes in the customer’s choice of format:

Circa-Punched Sheets: Special Request Formats

Circa Special Request refills are also available to fill that beautiful notebook, of course—take a deep breath, because the list is extensive! They include a Weekly Agenda refill, project planner, things to do, multitask organizer, menu planner, shopping list, address, Web site information, full-page ruled, college ruled (with or without title boxes), full-page grid, engineer grid, annotation grid, right-annotation ruled, annotation ruled with double header, steno ruled, storyboard, Bookography, message cards, ruled/grid, or blank. Many of these are in the various Circa sizes, including letter, junior, compact, and even PDA (3 x 5 size) and micro PDA (2 x 3 1/2, the size of a business card).

Better in Threes: Three-Hole-Punched Special Request Formats

And now for the customer’s tri-ring binder, Special Request even includes three-hole punched Levenger paper for loose-leaf binders, which come in formats including full-page ruled, address, storyboard, project planner, things to do, annotation ruled, annotation grid, or blank.

Straitlaced Paper: Unpunched Special Request Formats

Special Request not only encompasses Circa notebooks, Circa refill sheets, and tri-ring punched paper, but also refills of unpunched Levenger paper in various formats—including full-page ruled, annotation ruled, grid, annotation grid, engineer grid, project planner, things to do, address, storyboard, or blank. Other bring-back formats include 3 x 5 index card–style Tasker Cards in these vertical formats: shopping list, ruled notes, things to do, messages, idea, and reminder; also in horizontal ruled (ruled lengthwise) and wallet-size Web cards.

And Levenger’s larger 4 x 6 cards are available as well (do you hear the cheers of joy in the background?), in ruled, grid, window, and blank, each of those in either horizontal or vertical orientation.

The Levenger Special Request line is flexible, adaptable, personalizable, and made to order—at the snap of your fingers. Hot off the presses!

The Circa Experience

Those of us who use Levenger’s Circa system for organized note-taking love it for a variety of reasons…including its simplicity of design, ease of use, customizability and durable beauty. Below are just a few of the reasons why customers insist on Circa for their note-taking needs:

Slim but not wiry

Spiral-bound notebooks don’t allow you to both remove and replace pages with ease, and Circa does. “The ability to take pages out of the Circa notebook, add pages in, and rearrange as needed really make this the best possible option in terms of functionality,” remarks a recent reviewer on the Levenger.com website. Yes, three-ring notebooks do allow for page reorganization, but at the expense of being fat and unwieldy. Circa users enjoy the slim, streamlined design of a Circa notebook as opposed to a bulky three-ring or static wirebound notebook.

It’s all about you

Circa is a comprehensive note-taking system that allows you to do so much more than an ordinary notebook. A host of functional accessories, including three varieties of Circa punches and Circa discs in different sizes allow you to customize your notebook to your needs. When you need to add a large number of pages, you can change the size of your discs, or transfer entire sections to another notebook. Refill sheets in different formats, including Things To Do and Project Planner, give your note-taking greater focus. The Circa Punch allows you to secure loose sheets in your notebook. Keep tools, supplies and receipts handy in a Zip Pocket, and note cards organized with a Pocket Dock-It. “This is the best system I’ve ever found for project management,” confirms another Circa note-taker.

The cover story

Unlike inexpensive imitator brands that provide some semblance of Circa functionality, the Levenger Circa system is unmistakable in its quality and longevity. Generously appointed in rich, full-grain leather (rather than thin, easily cracked and damaged “top grain” leather, which is ironically far from top-quality), the Circa Leather Foldover Notebook, Circa Jacket, Zip Folio and Master Folio are designed to last through years of daily use. This is the kind of leather that gains character over time, acquiring that attractively, lovingly worn-in look that only fine leather goods are able to achieve. Of course, Levenger also offers leather alternatives—including the sturdy, colorful Bookcloth Notebook, and a new premium material called LevTex that looks and feels like fine leather (coming soon).

Share the reasons you love Circa at Facebook.com/Levenger and Twitter.com/Levenger, or leave a review on any Circa product page at Levenger.com. We love to hear from our Circa customers, so we can continue to innovate and improve this award-winning note-taking system.

A Cornucopia of New Levenger Products to Give Thanks For This Thanksgiving

catalogLevenger’s latest catalog offers a spectacular assortment of wonderfully clever, why-didn’t-I-think-of-that products—as customers have come to expect from Levenger. The cover is emblazoned with its newest bookend: a stunning portrayal of Winston Churchill’s racehorce, Colonist II, complete with a photo of Churchill at a race on the back of the bookend plus a quote of his on the front.

Open the catalog’s cover to begin your journey in the most intelligent toyland: the new Verona II pen, now in red; the beautiful leather Pocquettes iPad Case and E-Reader Case; G. Lalo stationery from France; new reading pillows for your iPad or your book; the new Nordic-inspired True Writer pens, the Blue Delft series; and the irresistibly adorable Bronze Reading Bear Cub Pen Stand.

Bronze Reading Bear Pen Stand

And that’s just the beginning. Peer a little deeper into the pages, and you’ll notice Levenger has added to its repertoire of Bomber Jacket offerings, including a new iPad Sling and an iPad/Travel Pack, keeping your tablet computer safe and sound wherever you go. And when you’re just sitting on the floor with your iPad, be sure to add what Levenger calls “the handiest pillow you’ll ever find”: the Canvas Kiss Pillow, shaped like a chocolate kiss with soft four-sided construction to prop your reader and to hold your reading and writing accoutrements.

One of Levenger’s perennial favorites is the Thai Pad (f.k.a. the Thai Book Rest), which is now also offered in outstanding leather and given new nomenclature as the Bomber Jacket E-Pad, with a nod to its flexibility as an e-reader holder, book rest and iPad propper.

Personalized College Paperweight

Personalized College Paperweight

Some people are almost impossible to buy for, but Levenger makes it a little easier to buy for—yes—even them, with the assortment of collegiate items that display a rendered drawing of a key site on campus of your recipient’s alma mater. The framed print, paperweight, and desk box can be personalized with the person’s name, college, and graduation year; the sterling silver cufflinks are an outstanding gift for the man who would love to have a conversation-starter that would enable him to gush about his school. Alumni love a bragfest in good humor, after all.

A few more new items for writing connoisseurs include a new shade of the Chesterton pen, now in espresso; the Kaweco Classic Sport pens, whose design is solely credited for lifting at least one playwright out of his anti-writing feelings he’d developed as a child; and for pencil purists, the Palomino Blackwing Pencil line is back—to satisfy its slew of fans. And a revolutionary new design in fountain pens is the Parker Ingenuity 5th Mode, which uses its own special refill that interacts perfectly with the nib, but doesn’t require that the pen be capped or maintained in any special way like traditional fountain pens. Brilliant.

Amazonia Card Case

Amazonia Card Case

And because Levenger likes to keep things fresh by adding unexpected offerings, browse the Amazonia Collection, built in the USA with exotic woods: the Magnifier, Bookmark, Card Holder, Card Case, and Money Clip. Their twin set in Pau Brasil and walnut variations of this line can even be monogrammed. You’ll be surprised at the intricate design and handiwork of these pieces. No typecasting there.

Raffinato Wristlet

But there are some things customers have come to expect on a regular basis, and one of those is Levenger’s delicious leather pieces—which are constantly being revived and redesigned. Be sure to view the Raffinato Collection, crafted of supple Italian leather and turn-lock or squeeze-open closures. The leather Cambridge Collection has been expanded to include cases for your iPad, e-reader and smartphone—and Tusting, makers of that spectacular line, recently branched into a new arena in velvety nubuck leather, the Tusting English Messengers (surprisingly available in plum!). All are sure to please the discriminating tastes of those who have a fond appreciation for leather pieces which are meticulously crafted in England.

There are always so many new things at Levenger, and the easiest way to see them all in one fell swoop is to visit the What’s New section of the Web site. There, you’ll be able to view the latest offerings in Levenger’s exclusive Circa disc-binding system notebooks, furniture, lighting, and trinkets for all ages and…well, let’s just say Levenger has also gone to the dogs this fall. Bow wow, wow wow!

Steve Leveen on heritage technologies: or why paper can still be cool

Levenger CEO and co-founder Steve Leveen had an intriguing conversation with Tribe magazine recently on why paper (and pens, and leather and wood) can make smartphones smarter and tablets even better tools. We call these the heritage technologies, and find that thought-catchers like our Circa and Shirt Pocket Briefcases still have a place alongside high technology in helping people be even more productive.

Have a read at what Steve has to say on Tribe (page 11 of the PDF).  Plus, you get to see what he keeps in his desk drawers. And feel free to tweet Steve with your take on heritage technologies.
