It was a signal moment in America’s history--an epochal call to explore the wild that created a country stretching from sea to sea. Here is the Lewis and Clark expedition (1804-06) told in a completely new way: through the maps the explorers used and made. Through these maps we track the tremendous infusion of new information--the Big Data of its day--that Lewis and Clark synthesized. Most compelling is the huge debt they owed the American Indians, whose concept of a map was so very different from Europeans’, and yet so fitting for this vast new land with its unfathomable terrain. Written by top scholars who have retraced much of Lewis and Clark’s journey, the book features more than 100 images, primarily from the Library of Congress archives, along with two loose foldouts that reproduce critical maps of 1803 and 1805. Lewis and Clark live on today--in our unquenchable drive to journey farther in how we see our world.
  • More than 100 images, reproduced primarily from the vast archives of the Library of Congress
  • Includes two loose foldouts measuring 36" x 28" that reproduce the critical maps of 1803 and 1805
  • Endpapers reproduce the cipher Thomas Jefferson created for the expedition
  • Author Ralph Ehrenberg is Chief of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress, and author Herman Viola is Curator Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution; both have retraced much of Lewis and Clark’s track
  • Limited-edition book not available in bookstores; printed in America
  • The loose foldout maps are reproductions of the Nicholas King Composite Map of the West from 1803 and the William Clark/Nicholas King Fort Mandan Map of 1805

"Although thousands of books and papers have been written about the expedition, this one fills a unique niche." Check out Steve's blog to read more on why this professional reviewer gives the book a thumbs up.

Comments about Levenger Mapping the West with Lewis and Clark:

This was a gift for my father. He called me immediately to tell me how happy he was with the book. He has read numerous accounts of Lewis and Clark's expedition over the years, but he genuinely excited about this version with the maps and reproductions of the source documents. Highly recommended for those who are in to history!

I love looking at old maps. Lewis and Clark's expedition was a very exciting point in American history. Spent an entire semester studying it in school. Glad to add this to our treasured book collection.

Comments about Levenger Mapping the West with Lewis and Clark:

This is a fantastic book! What a great way to tell the adventures of Lewis and Clark through the actual maps that they used, folded and carried with them! This book makes you feel like you are travelling with them as you learn so much more about the land and the people they encountered from the notes they left behind on their maps. Ralph was very kind to spend time with me pouring over the original maps at the Library of Congress in late August and his passion for maps and the adventures they portray are evident in this book!!

Simply Exquisite

Comments about Levenger Mapping the West with Lewis and Clark:

What an exquisite book! The red linen is stunning and there is an amazing level of detail - every old map has been reproduced with its imperfection. The two large maps in the pockets of the book are suitable for framing. One can get lost in this captivating story.

Best of all - it was done in the USA!
