The Burchfield Doodler Journal
He was the doodler who caught the eye of Disney, and the watercolorist whom President Lyndon Johnson called “artist to America.” Charles Burchfield (1893-1967) was known for creating watercolors alive with movement and infused with rich color. His works have been featured at both the Whitney and MOMA. But even if his brush was idle, his pencil was not: Burchfield was an inveterate and exuberant doodler. “I recall doodling on my mother’s Sunday tablecloth before I was of grade-school age,” he once confessed.
Enjoy a journal of Burchfield’s doodles and yours
We worked with the Burchfield Penney Art Center  to create this doodler’s delight of a journal. It contains full-color facsimiles of more than 100 of Burchfield’s celebrated scribbles, culled from thousands that the artist made. His drawings are artfully arranged throughout so that you can both enjoy Burchfield’s doodles and create your own. And you needn’t be an artist to be a doodle devotee. Doodling has been shown to help all of us who think, do it even better.
