Reviews

"Outstanding pen! A definite step up from the typical resin pen. The barrel has a nice feel to it, not that tacky feeling you can get with many plastics or cheaper acrylics. This is smooth in the hand and well balanced as are all True Writers. The metal cap is lustrous and distintive, just as the character it is named after. It is a fine addition to a collection and will be conversation starter. Your friends and coworkers might pull out a pen but they sure won’t have one of these."

A Step Down

"Before I got this Gatsby fountain pen, I’ve had a Two-Tone Herringbone, which is amazing. Beautiful metal craftsmanship, ease of use off the charts. When you use the Herringbone, not only does it look and feel luxurious, it writes really well! I’ve never once had an ink flow problem with it. It became a daily driver, one of my favorite pens in my collection. It’s strange that this Gatsby pen is more expensive, because it’s… different. The cap is the same nice metal, but the body of the pen is now plastic. Which is disappointing looks-wise — it looks much cheaper in real life than on the shop page — but on the bright side, since the Gatsby is now very light, I hoped maybe the pure writing performance would be so good it would compensate for the cheap look of material. It does not. The Gatsby comes with two nibs, silver / gold and all black. They’re removable, and also temperamental. The Herringbone nib is so consistent you’d almost think it can write upside down; these Gatsby nibs fail to consistently work at the same angles the Herringbone nibs can tackle easily. Honestly, I just can’t identify anything that makes the Gatsby justify its more expensive price point. It looks worse, writes worse, and feels worse in your hand. It feels like the changes were a decision based on profit margins, not craftsmanship. A cheapening of prior luxury. With that said, it’s still a nice pen! But this one writes and feels like a $40 pen, definitely not a $130 pen."

Cheaply Made Pen

"This pen was beautiful in the Levenger catalog and I was so excited to buy it for my husband for Christmas. However, upon opening the pristine box, I couldn't have been more disappointed in the product it contained. First, it was damaged. The "gleaming 24k gold-plated engraved cap" had cracked and peeling finish from the tip and pocket clip. What looks as if it's supposed to be the Levenger tree looks like the finish is just gone. The "lustrous, polished black resin barrel" is lightweight plastic. I would compare the feel of the barrel to be similar to the free promotional pens that come in the mail. It is light as a feather without the cap on it. But even the cap doesn't have much weight to it. It appears to be some sort of resin just plated in gold. The pocket clip is actually metal, and is the only part of the pen that feels like it was made from durable materials. If you are someone who appreciates the feel of a fine pen and notice its weight and balance in your hand when writing, I would not recommend purchasing this item. It is certainly not worth its price tag, and it will save you the $8. 95 handling fee to be deducted from your return."
